in drawing 1 class this summer, one of the first concepts we studied was negative space. this is a drawing that i did from a picture i had taken of the night sky and moon through the tree limbs. we were only to shade where the negative space was and to show depth by using darker and/or heavier lines.
drawing by studying negative space really made a difference in drawing. i would've never tried to draw this picture otherwise because all of "the stuff" was overwhelming to try and draw. by drawing what "was not" -- that made it much simpler.
this was done using 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, and 9B pencils on Canson heavy white drawing paper and sprayed w/ matte sealant to prevent smearing.

Jill,
This is lovely. A wonderful use of negative space. It lends the image a seeming Asian appearance. The use of tone is very well done.
Really wonderful & unique!
Really neat kind of drawing, Jill. It really shows negative space quite well.
I can just imagine what this would look like done with coloured pencils in appropriate colours. You could try makng a copy of your original with the copier and adding some colour to the copy, if you wanted to. That way you keep your original art pristine. I have a feeling it would be awesome! My opinion, only.
I love the drawing! (Can you tell?)
Very interesting. All my friends make we wish I had real talent as an artist.
Ah well, Playing at art is fun, too.
Very elegant! This exercise brings back memories.
This is a great way to do this challenge. I really like the drawing too, I'm just starting to play with negative space in art myself.
You really captured the "mood" here. Good for you for keeping up your artwork while burdened with studies! I've seriously neglected my blog...because I've seriously neglected my artwork. Very busy freelancing.
This is great, Jill! I love the effect...
Beautiful! I love the moon. And your drawing is just awesome! I've been checking your blog regularly for a long time now, and didn't realize you were a JournalWriting member! How cool is that? I'm a fan!

love the work. mr. wonderful
hmmm... I'm not sure I like this! I am sure that yours is great, I just don't know if I like the idea of drawing what isn't instead of what is! Love ya, Mom! Summer
This is a great exercise in negative space - it makes a really lovely pattern, and I like the way the moon is framed by the leaves creating a strong focal point. Nice job.
i love this!
Just added the mushroom to the challenge files, didn't know about them. Just a new member finding my way . So thanks for your comment and advice. Now I will enjoy looking at your drawings. Eileen
You did great on this study, Jill. I did many of these studies years back en I also enjoyed it...it really forced me to concentrate. Your has a lovely abstract feel to it.
